Today, in a post genomic era, proteins are recombinantly expressed for mass production and must be separated and purified from containing media. Alongside recombinant proteins, native proteins are purified from fluids, such as human blood plasma, in order to fulfill immune and other deficiency requirements.

However, current processes for the manufacturing of protein based products have technological limitations, such as low yield and limited capacity, which create bottlenecks in production and a general low availability of high quality product in a reasonable price.
